WHO ARE YOU?

If someone asked you, “Who are you?” what would you say? Maybe you would answer with your name, occupation, role within your family, where you come from, or something you have accomplished. These things may describe parts of your life, but they do not tell the whole story of who you are. Sometimes our understanding of ourselves becomes shaped by what other people have said about us. Rejection, failure, mistakes, comparison, painful experiences, and the opinions of others can become labels we carry for years. But when you belong to Christ, your identity is not ultimately determined by your past, your mistakes, your achievements, your circumstances, or other people's opinions. Your identity must be rooted in what God says about you.

REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE IN CHRIST

Scripture says: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation...” - 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV). When we place our faith in Jesus, Scripture describes something much deeper than simply becoming a better version of ourselves. We become new creations in Christ. Your past may be part of your story, but it does not have to remain your identity. You may remember who you used to be. Other people may remember who you used to be. You may still be healing or dealing with consequences from previous seasons, but don't confuse your history with your identity. Your past tells part of your story. Christ tells you who you are now.

STOP WEARING LABELS GOD DIDN'T GIVE YOU

Maybe you have carried labels such as useless, unwanted, failure, not good enough, broken, unlovable, or rejected. Perhaps somebody spoke those words over you, or circumstances caused you to believe them. But there comes a point when we have to ask: “Does this agree with what God says about me?” Scripture says those who receive Christ and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God (John 1:12). Believers are described as God's workmanship (Ephesians 2:10), part of His chosen people (1 Peter 2:9), and new creations in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Knowing your identity in Christ requires replacing lies with truth. If we don't know what God's Word says, it becomes much easier to allow someone else's opinion to become our identity. Do not allow temporary experiences to become permanent identities.

WHEN YOU FORGET WHO YOU ARE

There may still be days when old thoughts return. Something may remind you of rejection, someone may touch an old wound, or a mistake may cause shame to resurface. That is when you need to remember who you are. When you feel rejected, remember that in Christ you belong to God's people. When you feel worthless, remember that you are God's workmanship. When your past tries to define you, remember that you are a new creation. When condemnation tries to hold you in shame, remember Romans 8:1. When you wonder whether you belong, remember that those who receive Christ and believe in His name become children of God. Your feelings may change from day to day. God's truth does not.

A REMINDER & ENCOURAGEMENT

If you are a believer, you may have spent years believing something about yourself that God never said. Keep returning to Scripture and allowing God's truth to renew the way you think. Your identity is not based on how successful you become, what title you carry, how many people approve of you, or what you accomplish. Before the title, before the platform, before the opportunity, and before the accomplishment - you are His. And if you are an unbeliever, these promises about being a child of God and a new creation in Christ are not simply positive labels to claim. John 1:12 tells us that those who receive Jesus Christ and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God. Your greatest need is not simply to feel better about yourself. You need Jesus Christ.

REFLECT 📝

Take a moment and ask yourself:

  • What labels have I been carrying?

  • Did God give me those labels, or did they come from people, circumstances, rejection, failure, or my own thoughts?

  • What does Scripture actually say?

  • If you are a believer, ask yourself: Am I allowing my past to define me more than my identity in Christ?

  • If you are an unbeliever, ask yourself: Do I truly know Jesus Christ, or am I searching for identity apart from Him?

BEFORE YOU GO

To the believer, when old labels return, measure them against God's Word. Do not allow rejection, failure, or your past to speak louder than the truth of who you are in Christ. Continue allowing Scripture to renew your mind and shape the way you see yourself and live.

To the unbeliever, discovering your true identity begins with Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that we have all sinned and fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23). Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). He calls us to repent and believe the Gospel (Mark 1:15). Salvation is God's gift of grace received through faith, not something we earn through our own works (Ephesians 2:8–9). Turn towards Jesus Christ. In Him there is forgiveness, reconciliation with God, salvation, and new life.

A PRAYER FOR YOU 🕊️

Father, thank You that my identity does not have to be determined by my past, my failures, my circumstances, or the opinions of other people. Help me to see myself according to the truth of Your Word and reveal any labels I have carried that You never gave me.

Remind me of who I am in Christ and help me to walk according to Your truth. When rejection, comparison, shame, or old thoughts return, renew my mind through Your Word and remind me that my identity is rooted in Jesus. Help me not to return to the labels of my past, but to continue growing in the truth of who You say I am.

And Lord, for anyone reading this who does not yet know Jesus Christ, open their heart to the truth of the Gospel. Help them to understand their need for You and lead them to repentance and faith in Jesus. May they come to know the forgiveness, reconciliation, salvation, and new life that are found in Christ.

Help each of us to look to Jesus rather than the world for our identity. May our lives be transformed by Your truth and ultimately point others back to You.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

BE ENCOURAGED.
