THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD: PRAYING PSALM 23

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD: PRAYING PSALM 23
Sometimes, when you don’t know what to pray, simply open your Bible and allow God’s Word to lead you: read and pray, pray and read. Psalm 23 is one of the most beautiful passages of Scripture because it reminds us who God is and who He is to us personally. David, who wrote this Psalm, was once a shepherd who cared for his father’s sheep before becoming king of Israel. He knew firsthand what it meant to lead, protect, feed, and care for a flock. Yet in Psalm 23, David the shepherd becomes the sheep, where he declares that the Lord God is his Shepherd, the One who cares for him, provides for him, guides him, protects him, restores him, and remains with him.
Before we can apply God’s Word to our lives and prayers, we need to understand what it says and what it reveals about God. As we begin to understand His Word, we can turn what we have read into prayer, allowing Scripture to shape our words, strengthen our faith, and draw our hearts closer to Him. This is not about following a religious formula or a method that we have to use every time we pray. Sometimes, simply understanding what God has said gives us the words we need to begin, praying His Will from His Word. Let Scripture be your starting point, and as you yield your heart to God, allow His precious Holy Spirit to help you pray.
So, as we read Psalm 23 be intentional about knowing the Word, understanding the Word, applying the Word, and praying the Word. Let's dive in.
“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1 (AMP)
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD = This speaks of relationship, dependence, care, guidance, protection, and provision. The LORD (Yahweh) refers to God Himself. David is declaring that the living God was his personal Shepherd, and as His children, we can also make this personal in our own lives. He is our Shepherd. He watches over us, cares for us, preserves us, feeds us, guides us, and shields us.
I SHALL NOT WANT = David was declaring his trust in the Lord as his Shepherd. He trusted that his Shepherd knew what he needed and would faithfully care for him. In the same way, you can make this personal: My Shepherd knows exactly what I need, and I trust Him to take care of me. I choose to depend on Him, trust His provision, and rest in His faithful care.
EXPLANATION: David understood what it meant to care for sheep, yet here he places himself in the position of one who needs to be shepherded. The Shepherd leads, and the sheep follow. This gives us a beautiful picture of surrender. We do not have to know every step ahead or have everything figured out. Our responsibility is to stay close to our Shepherd and follow where He leads. David’s confidence was not based on having everything he wanted, but on knowing who was caring for him. In the same way, our security is found in trusting the Shepherd who knows what we need and remains faithful in His care.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“The Lord is my Shepherd. I trust Him to provide for me, and I choose to be content and rest in His faithful care.”

“He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.” – Psalm 23:2 (AMP)
HE LETS ME LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES = Green pastures speak of nourishment, provision, and rest. Sheep do not always know what they need or what is best for them, that's why they need a shepherd. The shepherd knows where to lead the sheep so they can be fed and find rest.
HE LEADS ME BESIDE STILL AND QUIET WATERS = This speaks of peace, refreshment, provision, life, and abundance. Just as water is essential for the life of the sheep, our Shepherd knows what we need to sustain and refresh us. He leads us to what gives life, restores our strength, and provides what we need.
EXPLANATION: Sheep depend upon their shepherd. Without a shepherd, they can easily wander, become lost, and struggle to find what they need. The sheep do not lead the shepherd to the green pastures. The shepherd leads them. This is why the words “He leads me” are so important. Just as certain things can keep sheep from resting, there are things that can disturb our rest too. We can remember them as the four Fs: fear, friction, flies, and famine.
Fear represents the worries and uncertainties that rob us of peace.
Friction represents conflict and difficult relationships.
Flies represent persistent troubles and distractions that wear us down.
Famine represents seasons of lack and anxiety about our needs.
The “fear, friction, flies, and famine” illustration is adapted from W. Phillip Keller’s A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.
In all four, we need our Shepherd to protect, guide, refresh, and provide. Our rest does not come from having no problems. It comes from knowing that we are under the care of our Shepherd. Like sheep, we do not always know what we need or where we should go. We may not know the way, but our Shepherd does. He knows where the green pastures are, where the still waters are, and exactly what we need.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“The Lord knows what I need and where I need to go. I trust Him to lead me, provide for me, refresh me, and give me rest. I choose to follow Him.”
“He refreshes and restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” – Psalm 23:3 (AMP)
HE REFRESHES AND RESTORES MY SOUL = The Hebrew word translated “refreshes” in some translations and “restores” in others comes from shub (Strong’s H7725), meaning to turn back, return, bring back, or restore. It gives us the picture of a Shepherd who does not abandon a wandering sheep but brings it back. Restoration is more than receiving strength when I am weary. When I wander, my Shepherd brings me back. When I am depleted, He refreshes me. When I have gone the wrong way, He restores me and leads me again.
HE LEADS ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR HIS NAME'S SAKE = God leads me in the right way, according to His character and His will. He does not simply lead me where I want to go. He leads me in the way that is right before Him, teaching me to walk in obedience to His Word. He does this for His name’s sake, so that my life reflects His character and brings glory to His name.
EXPLANATION: God cares about what is happening within us. When we are weary, He refreshes us, and when we wander, He restores us and brings us back. Like a shepherd bringing a straying sheep back to the flock, our Shepherd does not abandon us when we lose our way. But restoration is followed by direction. God not only brings us back, but He leads us forward in paths of righteousness. Following our Shepherd means surrendering our own direction and allowing Him to guide our steps according to His Word, His will, and His character. We do not need to know the entire path ahead. We need to stay close to the Shepherd who does. Our prayer becomes, Lord, do not simply bless the path I have chosen but Lead me on the path You have chosen.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“The Lord restores me when I wander and refreshes me when I am weary. I surrender my own way and trust Him to lead me in the path He has chosen for me.”
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me.” – Psalm 23:4 (AMP)
EVEN THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH = The valley represents dark, fearful, and difficult seasons where danger, suffering, uncertainty, or even death may cast its shadow over your path. Yet David says, “I walk through.” A shadow may appear dark and frightening, but it does not have the same power as the thing that casts it. For the believer, Jesus has faced the reality of death and overcome it. The shadow cannot stop you from walking with your Shepherd. The Shepherd who led you through green pastures is still with you in the darkest valley.
I FEAR NO EVIL FOR YOU ARE WITH ME = God’s presence is your confidence in the valley. You may face darkness, danger, and uncertainty, but you do not have to be controlled by fear because your Shepherd is with you.

EXPLANATION: Having God as our Shepherd does not mean every path will be green pastures and still waters. Sometimes the Shepherd leads us through valleys. The valley may be dark, painful, and uncertain, but it does not mean we have left the Shepherd’s care. Notice the change in David’s words. Earlier he says, “He leads me” and “He restores me,” but in the valley he says directly to God, “You are with me.” In the darkest part of the journey, David’s confidence is the presence of his Shepherd. The valley may change your surroundings, but it does not change who your Shepherd is. You may not know what lies ahead, but remember who walks with you.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“I will not fear the valley because my Shepherd is with me. I may not know what lies ahead, but I know who walks with me. His presence is my confidence, and I trust Him to lead me through.”
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; my cup overflows.” – Psalm 23:5 (AMP)
YOU PREPARE A TABLE BEFORE ME IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES = The picture now shifts from the Lord as Shepherd to the Lord as Host (the One who welcomes, serves, provides for, and cares) for His guest. God prepares a table for you with personal care and provision, even while your enemies are still present. Opposition does not cancel God’s provision over your life.
YOU HAVE ANOINTED AND REFRESHED MY HEAD WITH OIL = Anointing the head with oil was associated with welcome, honour, and refreshment. David pictures the Lord as a generous Host who does not merely allow him to enter, but welcomes him, honours him, and refreshes him as His guest. The oil represents the abundant care and favour of the Host. In the same way, God welcomes us into His presence and refreshes us with His care. Even when we are surrounded by opposition, we can rest knowing that we are received, valued, and cared for by Him.
MY CUP OVERFLOWS = God’s goodness is not pictured as barely enough. The overflowing cup speaks of His abundant goodness, care, and provision.

EXPLANATION: David now pictures the Lord as a generous Host who prepares a table for him in the presence of his enemies. The enemies have not necessarily disappeared, yet David can sit at the table because the One who provides for him is also able to protect him. God’s care is seen in the prepared table, the anointing oil, and the overflowing cup. Together they give us a picture of personal care, refreshment, honour, and abundance. Sometimes we become so focused on what is against us that we fail to recognise what God has placed before us. The enemy may be present, but so is the table. Opposition does not determine what God can provide.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“I will not focus on what is against me, but on the God who provides for me. Even in the presence of opposition, He cares for me, protects me, refreshes me, and fills my cup to overflowing.”
“Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell forever in the house and in the presence of the Lord.” – Psalm 23:6
GOODNESS AND MERCY AND UNFAILING LOVE SHALL FOLLOW ME ALL THE DAYS OF MY LIFE = GOODNESS: God’s kindness and His desire to do what is good toward you. MERCY: God’s compassion toward you. He does not treat you according to what you deserve, but responds with mercy and grace. UNFAILING LOVE: God’s steadfast, faithful love that does not abandon you or change when your circumstances change. David is declaring that God’s goodness, mercy, and unfailing love will remain with him throughout his life. In the same way, your Shepherd goes before you to lead you, while His goodness and mercy follow you wherever you go. You are surrounded by His faithful care through every season.
AND I SHALL DWELL FOREVER IN THE HOUSE AND IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD = David ends with a desire to remain with God and enjoy fellowship with Him. His greatest blessing is not simply what the Shepherd provides, but the Shepherd Himself. In the same way, your greatest blessing is not only what God can give you, but God Himself. You can desire His presence above His provision, knowing that the Shepherd who has cared for you throughout every season invites you to remain close to Him and enjoy fellowship with Him.
EXPLANATION: David ends Psalm 23 with confidence that God’s goodness, mercy, and unfailing love will follow him all the days of his life. His confidence is not based on perfect circumstances, but on the faithful character of his Shepherd. God’s goodness and mercy are not only present in the green pastures and beside the still waters. They remain through the valley days, the waiting days, the enemy days, the restoration days, and the overflowing cup days. Through every season, David trusts in the faithful care of God. Psalm 23 begins with “The Lord is my Shepherd” and ends with David dwelling in the presence of the Lord. The Psalm begins with relationship and ends with relationship. David has experienced the Shepherd’s provision, guidance, restoration, protection, and care, but ultimately, the greatest gift is the Shepherd Himself. In the same way, your greatest blessing is not only what God provides for you, but God Himself. Through every season, you can trust His goodness, mercy, and unfailing love and remain close to Him. The green pastures may change, the valleys may come, and enemies may be present, but your Shepherd remains faithful. The greatest gift is the Shepherd Himself.
MY DECLARATION 🕊️
“The Lord is my Shepherd. Through every season, I will trust His leading, rest in His care, and remain close to Him. Above every blessing, the greatest gift is my Shepherd Himself.”
Whether you want to read this scripture again or another scripture of the bible, keep your bible open anyway, remove all the noise, and just begin... remember, don't just read the Word, but study the Word, understand the Word, apply the Word and pray the Word.

REFLECTION 📝
Take a moment to slow down and reflect on what Psalm 23 is revealing to you about God as your Shepherd and about you as His Sheep.
Do I truly trust the Lord as my Shepherd, or am I still trying to carry and control everything myself?
Where might God be asking me to stop striving, rest in His care, and allow Him to lead me?
Is there an area of my soul that feels weary, discouraged, or depleted that I need to surrender to God for restoration?
What valley am I walking through right now, and how would remembering “You are with me” change the way I walk through it?
Am I focusing more on the enemies around me, or on the table God has prepared before me and the goodness He has already shown me?
Take these questions before the Lord. You do not have to have all the right words. Be honest with Him, open His Word, and allow what you have read to become your prayer and your walk.
A PRAYER FOR YOU 🕊️
Heavenly Father, holy is Your name. You are my Shepherd, and I choose to trust You. Your Kingdom come and Your will be done in my life. Lead me in Your ways, provide what I need, restore my soul, and guide me in paths of righteousness.
When I walk through dark valleys, help me remember that You are with me. Protect me, guide me, comfort me, and deliver me from evil. Even in the presence of opposition, help me keep my eyes on You and trust in Your provision and care.
Thank You for Your goodness, mercy, and unfailing love. Above every blessing, I desire Your presence. Keep my heart close to You and teach me to follow You wherever You lead.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
BE ENCOURAGED.
ALL GLORY TO GOD MOST HIGH 🔥
