WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT

Updated: Sep 20

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WALK BY FAITH?
Faith can feel easy when everything makes sense. When the answer has arrived, the door has opened, the provision is there, and the path ahead is clear, trusting God may not feel difficult. But what about when you cannot see what comes next? What about when you have prayed but are still waiting? What about when circumstances do not look the way you expected?
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Biblical faith does not mean pretending difficult circumstances do not exist. It means our confidence in God is not determined solely by what we can currently see.
FAITH HAS AN OBJECT
Christian faith is not simply believing hard enough and hoping something good will happen. Our faith is directed towards God. We trust Him because of who He is, His character, His faithfulness, His promises, His wisdom, and His saving work through Jesus Christ. Faith isn't confidence in our ability to control an outcome. It is confidence in God even when we cannot control the outcome.
FAITH GROWS THROUGH GOD'S WORD
Romans 10:17 connects faith with hearing the message concerning Christ. If we want our faith strengthened, we need God's Word. When fear says, “Everything is going to fall apart,” return to Scripture. When doubt says, “God has forgotten you,” return to Scripture. When circumstances make you question God's character, return to Scripture. Faith needs truth. The more we know God's Word, the better equipped we are to recognise thoughts and beliefs that contradict it.

TRUST WHEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND
Proverbs 3:5–6 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all our heart rather than leaning on our own understanding. There will be things you simply do not understand. You may wonder why something happened, why the answer hasn't come, why a door closed, or why the waiting is taking so long. Faith doesn't require you to pretend you have answers you don't have. You can say, “I don't understand this,” while still saying, “But I will continue to trust God.” Those two statements can exist together.

FAITH DOESN'T DENY REALITY
Biblical faith is not pretending problems aren't real. David knew Goliath was large. The disciples knew the storm was real. Paul knew imprisonment and persecution were real. Faith does not require us to call a problem imaginary. Instead, faith recognises that our circumstances are not greater than God. You can acknowledge the problem while refusing to allow the problem to determine everything you believe about God.
Sometimes faith looks like moving forward. Sometimes it looks like waiting. Sometimes it means knocking on another door, and sometimes it means accepting that a particular door has closed. The question is: “Am I responding faithfully according to God's Word and wisdom?”
FAITH REQUIRES ACTION
James teaches that faith without works is dead. Real faith affects the way we live. If we trust God, that trust should eventually become visible through our choices. Faith means obeying when God's Word speaks clearly, forgiving when Scripture calls us to forgive, speaking truth when lying would be easier, continuing to do good when quitting would be easier, seeking wisdom rather than acting recklessly, and taking the next faithful step. Faith isn't merely something we say. It becomes something that can be seen through obedience.
FAITH IS NOT PRESUMPTION
There is also an important difference between faith and assuming God must do exactly what we want. Faith says, “I trust God.” Presumption says, “God must do what I have decided.”
Faith submits to God's wisdom. We can pray boldly while still saying, “Your will be done.” Our confidence is not that every situation will unfold according to our preferred plan. Our confidence is that God remains trustworthy regardless of the outcome.
WHEN YOUR FAITH FEELS WEAK
There may be moments when you genuinely struggle to believe. You do not have to hide that struggle from God. In Mark 9:24, a father came to Jesus and cried out, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” What an honest prayer. You can bring your questions, fears, doubts, and uncertainty before God. Pray. Return to His Word. Seek sound biblical teaching. Talk with mature believers. Continue pursuing Him. Weak faith does not become stronger by pretending doubt doesn't exist. Faith grows as we continue turning towards God and His truth.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT?
Sometimes we spend so much time looking at the problem that it becomes all we can see - the bank account, the diagnosis, the rejection, the delay, the closed door, the difficult relationship, the uncertainty, or the opposition. Those circumstances may require real attention and wise action, but they should not become the only thing shaping what you believe. Ask yourself: What does God's Word say? What is actually true? What can I responsibly do? What do I need to entrust to God? Walking by faith doesn't mean ignoring what is in front of you. It means refusing to allow what you see to become greater than the God you trust.
FAITH IN ACTION
This week, make your faith practical. Read God's Word intentionally. Remember God's past faithfulness. Pray honestly about your fears and uncertainties. Obey what Scripture has already made clear. Wait rather than forcing something simply because waiting is uncomfortable. Act when wisdom and obedience require action. Surrender the outcome to God, and thank Him even while you are still waiting. You don't need to see the whole journey before taking the next step. Walk by faith. Trust God with what you cannot see, obey Him in what He has already shown you, and leave the outcome in His hands.
A REMINDER & ENCOURAGEMENT
If you are walking through uncertainty right now, remember that walking by faith does not mean you will always feel fearless, understand everything, or know exactly what God is doing. Faith keeps turning towards God even when circumstances remain unclear. When your faith feels weak, return to His Word. When you are afraid, bring that fear before Him. When you don't know what to do, seek His wisdom. When Scripture has already shown you what is right, obey it. And when the outcome is outside your control, place it back into God's hands. You may not be able to see what comes next, but you can continue trusting the One you are following.
REFLECT 📝
Take a moment and ask yourself:
What situation am I struggling to trust God with right now?
Am I allowing what I see to determine what I believe about God?
What does Scripture say about the situation I am facing?
Is there something God has already made clear that I need to obey?
Am I trusting God, or am I trying to control the outcome?
And when your faith feels weak, remember the honest prayer of Mark 9:24: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
BEFORE YOU GO
Walking by faith begins with knowing who your faith is in. Christian faith is not faith in ourselves, our feelings, our ability to create an outcome, or simply believing that everything will eventually work out the way we want. Our faith is centred on Jesus Christ. For those who already belong to Jesus, continue building your life upon His Word. Faith does not end when you first believe the Gospel. We are called to continue trusting, obeying, growing, persevering, and walking with Christ even through seasons when we cannot see what lies ahead.
And perhaps you are reading this but have never placed your faith in Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that we have all sinned and fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23), but God has made the way for us to be reconciled to Him. Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:3–4). He calls us to repent and believe the Gospel (Mark 1:15), and salvation is God's gift received by grace through faith, not something we can earn through our own works (Ephesians 2:8–9). Before you can truly understand what it means to walk by faith, begin by placing your faith in Jesus Christ.
A PRAYER FOR YOU 🕊️
Father, I pray for the person reading this today. Teach them to walk by faith and not simply by what they can see. When they do not understand what You are doing, help them continue trusting Your character and Your Word.
Strengthen their faith through Scripture. Give them wisdom to know when to wait and when to act. Protect them from fear, unbelief, presumption, and the need to control outcomes that belong in Your hands. When their faith feels weak, remind them that they can come honestly before You and ask for help.
Give them courage to obey what You have already shown them and grace to trust You with what they cannot yet see. And for anyone reading who does not yet know Jesus Christ, open their heart to the truth of the Gospel.
Lead them to repentance and faith in Jesus, and may they come to know the forgiveness, reconciliation, salvation, and new life found in Him.
Help us all to keep our eyes upon Jesus, to trust Your Word above what we see, and to continue walking faithfully with You one step at a time.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
BE ENCOURAGED.
ALL GLORY TO GOD MOST HIGH 🔥
